100 students from 50 different countries attended AEMS and GBS 2017

The interest in both summer schools is growing from year to year. 100 students from 50 different countries and all continents took the chance to attend this year. This is the highest number of participants since the two programs have been installed. Green.Building.Solutions (GBS) and Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) are two summer schools that focus on sustainable construction and alternative economic solutions.

“There is no alternative!” This phrase is often used to signify that the current economic and financial system is the only one that works. But in fact, there are plenty of alternatives! AEMS focuses on alternative and innovative ideas and presents reform proposals that consider natural boundaries and the human factor to be equal parts of the equation. Students learned from and engaged in discussions with internationally recognized lecturers, like Christian Felber (Economy for the Common Good), Bernard Lietaer (Club of Rome) and Richard Werner (University of Southampton), experts in its respective fields. After successful completion of the Summer School the participants received 5 ECTS points from the University of Natural Resources and Life Science Vienna (BOKU Vienna).

The lecturers have been outstanding and the people taking part are from all around the world. I really like that environment.” - Alex Lantos, London School of Economics, UK

Green.Building.Solutions was created especially to pass on the knowledge about passive-house planning, ecological and sustainable building to future architects, planners and engineers. As part of the unique student experience, students are accommodated in new, high-profile passive house student housing, giving those attending the program the opportunity to live and breathe in modern, sustainable environments. This year’s project work “Smart Living Design Study” also focused on student housing. The participants planned highly energy-efficient student accommodation with sustainable building materials while creating environments to foster social interaction. Besides that, twelve GBS participants had the chance to participate in the STO-workshop, where they built two types of passive house wall with their own hands. After successful completion of the GBS, participants receive 7 ECTS points from BOKU Vienna.

Regarding participants, they were outward and friendly that I felt we were one big family. I had good time interacting with them.” - Pem Lepcha, Bhutan
