OeAD Student Housing celebrates the rewards of a sustainable approach

The organiser of the world-renowned Green.Building.Solutions (GBS) summer university has had its pioneering work to develop passive house buildings for student communities recognised internationally at two key events.

OeAD Student Housing secured the Education and Vocational Training accolade at the European Solar Prize awards, held in Luxembourg, for its ‘mineroom’ development.

Across in France, another OeAD project, the PopUp dorms, was also recognised, in the ‘Sustainable Construction’ category of the Green Solution Awards, held in Paris.

Based in Leoben, in Styria, Austria, mineroom is the first global, wooden-built high-volume passive house, providing a sustainable home for 201 international students and setting the pace for an environmentally considerate development.

The PopUp dorms, in Vienna, provide temporary, flexible accommodation for students and are also built to passive house standards.

Recognition in the awards supports the OeAD Student Housing – part of Austria’s agency for international mobility and co-operation in education, science and research – in sharing its knowledge of sustainable buildings through its annual GBS programme.

GBS uses the Austrian capital’s world-leading status to provide a live case study in passive house developments and sustainable, smart city expertise – and a pillar of the programme is the ability to understand how OeAD has delivered a suite of developments to the passive house standard or abovem including EnergyPLUS and EnergyZERO buildings..

Students on the programme are housed in one of the energy-efficient developments during their GBS studies, enabling them to become fully familiar with the low carbon developments.

Günther Jedliczka, CEO of the OeAD-Housing Office, said: “We are very proud to achieve this recognition, particular as 2020 is a landmark year for GBS, with the summer university celebrating its 10th anniversary.

“We use our buildings to reflect Austria’s leading role in relation to eco-friendly building and seek to share this knowledge with our international students, so they can carry the message to the world.”

Registration for GBS 2020 is due to open in mid-December.
