We are proud to be the winners of the prize “Education for sustainable development – BEST OF AUSTRIA“! The prize honors outstanding projects by individuals, institutions and organizations related to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

On behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management the Environmental Education FORUM (FORUM Umweltbildung) awarded the prize to the Summer School AEMS on November 22, 2016 at the Landhaus St. Pölten. We have been honored with the award in the category 1 “political support”. This category stands for projects that integrate ESD in education systems. At the AEMS students investigate and debate how economic, political, monetary and environmental factors need to be changed to be more sustainable. Looking at alternatives to the current system, where profits still count but factors such as life-work balance, ethics, sustainability and the environment are not considered, the summer school also offers a unique opportunity for students wanting to understand how happiness and satisfaction are key drivers rather than material goods.

Education for Sustainable Development is included in three targets of the Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted by the 193 member states of the United Nations in 2015. The overall objective of ESD is “is to equip people with knowledge of and skills in sustainable development, making them more competent and confident while at the same time increasing their opportunities for leading healthy and productive lifestyles in harmony with nature and with concern for social values, gender equity and cultural diversity.” (UNECE 2016)
